My name is Margherita and this is my story…
Born in Milan, Italy, I grew up in the countryside with my grandparents, my parents, and my two younger siblings – my brother Francesco and my sister Teresa.
I come from a family of fashion designers. Their name is Missoni.
In my childhood, every day after school my brother, my sister and I would go to my mother’s office. Full of pencils and markers, fabrics and beads; it was great fun to be a child and to express my creativity through drawing and playing dress up in all of the wonderful clothes. I loved to daydream. I would dream in the car, going to school, and at night in bed before falling asleep. I dreamed about the life I envisioned and about one day growing up to become a designer like my mother and her mother before her.
After spending time at University, I studied acting in New York where I also functioned as Missoni
Brand Ambassador; then I spent time pursuing my acting career in Paris and Rome. The freedom and encouragement to pursue my passions were part of my upbringing.
Finally, I moved back to Italy, but only when it felt right. This was an organic evolution and came together with the understanding of who I was as an individual. It’s then that I began consulting on important projects such as Missoni for Target and eventually directing the creative teams for the
Missoni accessory and swim collections.
It’s often like that: one travels far, only to realize that it was right next to you. My husband and I share a very strong sense of belonging to the town outside of Milan where we both grew up and we would love for our baby son Otto (and the other children to come….!) to experience that: to know that they are free to express, create and explore, but know there is a place where they can always go back to. A place where there is no judgment because there are no right or wrong choices.
Growing up, I saw the world as an inspiring place, full of interesting people, and I want the Margherita kids collection to expose Otto and children like him to a colorful world of possibilities because -why not? This new evolution of my career came again as a spontaneous step forward, just as it had been for my mother before me, who had been encouraged by her parents to do what made her happy, whether it be organic chicken farming, opening a kindergarten, or designing her own Angela Missoni collection. Hence her blessing couldn’t have been more sincere when my time came.
As I embark on this new venture, the Margherita collection for kids, I am creating my own brand which has roots in my background and comes to life through my experiences: the things I’ve seen, the people I’ve met, the places I’ve been. My hope for this brand is to nourish a creative instinct and that same freedom dressing I was so lucky to grow up with. The possibilities of mixing and matching are infinite; both children and parents can choose whatever they like without ever going wrong. Because … anything is possible.
