Final Fantasy X2 and Sex and the City

With ‘Sex & the City’ expected in theaters nationwide by the end of the month, I could honestly say that I am not that interested. Watching four women, albeit dressed in the latest fashion is not just my cup of tea.

Yet, as a video gamer, I could not help but think of Yuna, Rikku and Paine, the three girls of Final Fantasy X-2 as the video game equivalent of Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte of Sex & the City.

The characters from Sex & the City do not need any introductions, but for those who are not into video games, Final Fantasy X-2 is the sequel to Final Fantasy X. The latter is a love story set in a world named Spira where two young lovers, Yuna and Tidus were separated in the end after they saved their world. Final Fantasy X-2, is Yuna’s search for Tidus.

Below are video clips for both so that you will have an idea.

Final Fantasy X-2

Released in 2001 and 2003 respectively, the years that were the height of the popularity of Sex & the City, the 2003 release of Final Fantasy X-2 was highly anticipated by video gamers because (1) it was the first time that Square Enix was launching a sequel for a game; (2) it was the first time that all leading characters in a game were female.

And the coup de grace – the dress spheres wherein the characters can change clothes so many times in a game; wherein in the video game world, a character only wears one outfit during the whole game.

Rumors said that Final Fantasy X-2 was Square Enix’s bid to get more females into gaming. But, video gaming is still 90% male, so they had to design the skimpiest and sexiest clothing around that quite frankly, I am not even sure if a real woman will wear it.

Perhaps it is just a video game programmer’s imagination of what women should look like. Maybe, it’s because the girls have to be sexy though it was rated T for Teen. And third, where is Patricia Field when you need her most?

I’ll accept, Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda wear better clothes and they are better dressers than Yuna, Rikku and Payne.

But, wait; the girls of Final Fantasy X-2 have to fight fire-breathing dragons and a planet-killer machine that was 1000 years in the making. And they have to look good while doing it too! Now, whom would you go for, the chevalier women of Final Fantasy X-2 or the metro girls of Sex and the City.
